Deendayal Upadhyay was an Indian thinker, economist, sociologist, historian, and journalist. He played an essential role in creating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and became the President of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (now the Bharatiya Janata Party). He opposed India’s blind secular support and Western democracy during British rule. Although he readily accepted the concept of democracy, he refused to accept Western oligarchy, exploitation, and capitalism. He devoted his life to making democracy powerful and to keep the things of the people ahead.

Deendayal Upadhyay was born on September 25, 1916, in Dhankia, Rajasthan, into a middle class reputed Hindu family. His great-grandfather’s name was Pandit Hariram Upadhyay, who was an eminent astrologer. His father’s name was Shri Bhagwati Prasad Upadhyay, and his mother’s name was Rampyari. Her father was employed as assistant station master in Jalesar, and her mother was a very religious-minded woman.

His younger brother’s name was Shivdayal Upadhyay. Unfortunately, when his age was only two and a half years, his father died untimely. After this, his family started living with his maternal grandfather. Here his family was trying to recover from the miseries that his mother left two young children and left the world while undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. Not only this, when he was only ten years old, his maternal grandfather also died.

His maternal uncle raised him like his own children. Apart from taking care of himself at a young age, he also took the responsibility of guarding his younger brother. Still, unfortunately, the brother suffered from smallpox and died on November 18, 1934. Deendayal saw many ups and downs in his low age, but he moved forward in life with his determination.

He passed the high school examination from Sikar. Deendayal, an intelligent and bright genius by birth, received many gold medals and prestigious awards while studying in school and college. He did his schooling at GD Birla College, Pilani, and did his graduation from Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur University. After this, he passed the civil service examination, but he abandoned it for the benefit of the general public.

Deendayal Upadhyaya was highly devoted to social service since the early years of his life. During his college days in 1937, he was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Kanpur. His Association with the Jana Sangh

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, and Deendayal Upadhyay was appointed as the first General Secretary. He continued as General Secretary of the Jana Sangh till December 1967. Impressed by his efficiency, intelligence, and qualities of perfection, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee used to say proudly to him, “If I have two Deendayals, I can change the political face of India.” But suddenly, with the untimely demise of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in the year 1953, the responsibility of the entire organization fell on the youthful shoulders of Deendayal Upadhyay.

Although democracy in India was established soon after independence, Deendayal Upadhyay had a fear that India would not be able to do so after long years of slavery.

He thought that it should be the duty of the administration to respect every person. According to him, democracy should not go beyond its limits, and public opinion should be ensured in the light of their faith and religion.

The Concept of ‘Integral Humanism’

The political philosophy based on the concept of ‘Integral Humanism’ established by Deendayal is a Bharatiya Jana Sangh product (the present Bharatiya Janata Party). According to him, ‘Integral Humanism’ is a unified program of body, mind, intellect, and soul of every human being.

As an independent nation, he said that India could not depend on Western concepts like individualism, democracy, socialism, communism, and capitalism. He was of the view that the Indian intellect is feeling suffocated by Western principles and ideologies. As a result, there is a lot of hindrance in developing and expanding the fundamental Indian doctrine.

Death

On December 19, 1967, Deendayal Upadhyay was elected President of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, but the destiny was somewhat different. The dead body of Deendayal was found at the Mughal Sarai railway station on the morning of February 11, 1968.
