What is Motor

Friends motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

In a three-phase induction motor, the electrical supply that we provide in the motor’s terminal box is our electrical energy; because of that, electrical power creates a magnet inside the motor. The process of making this magnet is called Mutual Induction. And the rotor starts rotating, and the energy we get when the rotor rotates is mechanical.

What is Generator

If we reverse it, that means a device in which we give mechanical energy to the input, and it provides us electrical power in the output. So that device is called a generator.

This is the only difference between a generator and a motor.

Motor Important Parts

There are two main parts to the motor.

  1. Stator
  2. Rotor

The part inside the motor that does not rotate even when the motor is running, we call it Stator.

And the part inside the motor that rotates when the motor is running is called the rotation part, which is called the rotor.

Induction Motor Working

When we provide electrical supply in the motor, the supply goes to the winding on the motor’s Stator, and due to the mutual induction, there is some magnet generation near the winding of the motor.

When the rotor comes in front of that magnet, a push on the rotor means a torque, which causes our rotor to rotate.

The Rotor is Divided into Two Parts

On the one hand, where we connect the drive, we mean whatever load we have. That part is called the drive end of the motor.

The other side of the rotor is fitted with a cooling fan; we call it the Non-Drive End of the motor.

Why Cooling Fan Important

The cooling fan’s job is to send air into the corrugated strip on the body of the motor, which we call a frame slot, which makes the motor cooling. This is very important for the motor.

Because the copper winding occurs on the motor’s starter when the motor continues to run for a long time, the current is also followed in them, due to which there are many losses, and the motor is hot.

In such a situation, a cooling fan is placed on the non-drive end to provide cooling of the motor, whose job is to protect the motor from heating by giving air to the frame of the motor.

Three Phase Induction Motor Types

There are two types of induction motor.

  1. Squirrel Cage Induction Motor
  2. Slip Ring Induction Motor

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor

It is the most commonly used AC motor. Its advantage is that its working is effortless. And the essential thing, it does not require frequent maintenance.

But we also get a shortage in this motor. We can use Squirrel Cage Induction Motor only in places where we do not need much torque in the beginning time.

Slip ring induction motor

The slip ring induction motor has an extra part we call sleeping.

The advantage of this is that you can also add a load of heavy torque to the starting with this motor.

Squirrel Cage and Slip Ring Motor Difference

The only difference is that you cannot add extra resistance on a Squirrel Cage induction motor. But on slip ring induction motor, if you need more torque in starting time, you can add extra resistance with the help of slip ring at that time.

The most significant difference is that in the sleeping motor, we can add the registers on the side of the rotor; the more resistance you add, the more torque you will get in starting.

This advantage does not happen in the squirrel cage motor because of the end rings of its rotor.

Because it is permanently short from the beginning, we cannot add resistance to the rotor circuit.

So friends, wherever we have more starting torque requirements, we will use a sleeping induction motor, and where we need average starting torque, we will use a squirrel cage induction motor.
